12:24 AM · Dec 7, 2022Video of the lava channel, lava in the upper slopes of Mauna Loa near the vent is traveling at ~26-36 ft per second (17.7-24mph). By the time it reaches the bottom flats, the flow is only moving at a rate of 68 ft/hr as it advances towards Saddle Road. For comparison, Fissure 8 in 2018 during its height was estimated to have lava traveling in the channel at 17.5mph on less steep slopes. Video from USGS, by L. Gallant.
