Revitalizing Lower Puna After Pele Came In 2018

4:53 AM · Jul 2, 2021

The 2018 eruption of Kilauea changed Lower Puna forever, the community three years later has only begun the recovery. The process towards rebuilding one’s life is not a quick one, especially when physical barriers block the paths forward. Large sections of government roadways that used to connect the area, and the region’s only boat ramp remain inaccessible to this day. This collaborative video on what eruption recovery means to the community includes Pi`ilani Ka`awaloa, Eileen O’Hara, Leila Kealoha, Daniel Kealoha, Michael Zoeller (USGS-HVO), Smiley Burrows, Deb Smith, Berna Kuahiwinui, Elizabeth Kekedi and Joe Kekedi Jr, and Ku`ulei Kealoha Cooper. This film is brought to you by Malama O Puna, funded by a Contingency Grant from Hawaii County Council Member Ashley Kierkiewicz.
