National Weather Service Issues Red Flag Fire Warning For Leeward Hawaii

11:05 PM · Aug 25, 2021

A Red Flag Warning for leeward areas has been issued due to gusty winds and low humidity by the NWS Honolulu. Text from NWS: Although windward areas did recently receive some rainfall, fuels remain dry in leeward areas. Combined with gusty trade winds and low relative humidities, critical fire weather conditions are expected over leeward areas this afternoon, and again on Thursday afternoon. The National Weather Service in Honolulu has issued a Red Flag Warning, which is in effect until 6 PM HST Thursday (8.26.2021). * AFFECTED AREA...Leeward portions of all Hawaiian Islands. * WIND...Trade winds up to 20 mph, with locally higher gusts. * HUMIDITY...40 to 45 percent through the afternoon hours. * IMPACTS...Any fires that develop will likely spread rapidly. Outdoor burning is not recommended. A Red Flag Warning means that critical fire weather conditions are either occurring now or will shortly. A combination of strong winds, low relative humidity, and warm temperatures can contribute to extreme fire behavior. A Red Flag Warning does not predict new fire starts.
