Maunaloa Weekly Report, June 25, 2021

1:49 AM · Jun 26, 2021

Overall, Maunaoloa is quiet over the last week. Seismic activity has consisted of small earthquakes spread around summit with a frequency only slightly above background levels of activity. There have been 37 earthquakes over the last week at the Maunaloa summit with only 1 earthquake of M1.3 or greater, and 129 were located under the southeast flank. Earthquakes from the previous week have been at depths of less than 8km (5mi) below ground level. GPS measuring the cross-caldera distance has been relatively flatlined since the small contraction that occurred in April, 2021, which also corresponds to the period of elevated earthquake activity for the year that has since diminished. Other GPS monitoring measurements show low rates of deformation over the previous week. Tiltmeters, thermal cameras, and SO2 monitoring show no significant changes. "Activity Summary: Mauna Loa Volcano is not erupting. Rates of seismicity at the summit remain slightly elevated and above long-term background levels. Other Mauna Loa monitoring data streams show no significant change in deformation rates or patterns that would indicate increased volcanic hazard at this time." ~ USGS-HVO (6.24.2021)
