M4.3 Pahala Earthquake

At 2:15pm this afternoon there was an magnitude 4.3 earthquake near the area of Pahala with a depth of 33.5km. The depth and location of the earthquake indicate that it is one of the many earthquakes that frequent the area south of Pahala. We refer to this type of earthquake as "Pahala Deep Quakes", as they normally happen around Pahala at a depth between 30 and 40km. There has been a total four M4.0+ earthquakes around Pahala at that depth over the last year. No change to the eruptive status of Kilauea or Maunaloa. According to scientist-in-charge at USGS-HVO, Ken Hon, “This earthquake is part of the ongoing seismic swarm under the Pāhala area, which started in August 2019. Webcams and other data streams show no impact on the ongoing eruption at Kīlauea. Please be aware that aftershocks are possible and may be felt. HVO continues to monitor Hawaiian volcanoes for any changes. The Alert Levels/Color Codes remain at WATCH/ORANGE  for  Kīlauea  and ADVISORY/YELLOW for Mauna Loa at this time.”
