Kīlauea Eruption Update: Visuals, Maunaloa & Samoa

Another week with big ooze-up lava flows complementing the persistently circulating lava lake in Kīlauea's summit crater of Halemaʻumaʻu continued the pattern of recent weeks and much of the past 6 months. Otherwise the eruption continues with its slow and steady changes, and no increased threat to people. As usual we review webcam time-lapses, images, monitoring data and reports courtesy of the USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory that document the small changes in activity, interspersed with discussions of live viewer questions. Once again we share lava viewing highlights from Two Pineapples, this week focused on the persistent lava lake. We check in on Maunaloa, tracking any changes since its earthquake swarm over a month ago, with still only minor changes such as slowly increasing ground deformation evident as it continues its long-term inflation. We review island earthquakes as usual, this week highlighted by Pāhala area deep quakes of magnitudes 4.0 and 4.2. In American Samoa, USGS-HVO scientists continue to monitor the ongoing earthquake swarm near Taʻu volcano, narrowing the likely source even as it appears that the seismicity has started to decline. Scientists continue to install monitoring equipment such as a second GPS station and to calibrate the new network.
