Kīlauea Eruption Update & USGS Volcano Awareness Month Presentations

3:04 AM · Jan 14, 2022

Kīlauea's eruption continues, having burst forth once again from its West Vent after each of another two day-long pauses in the past week. The eruption and emission pattern still closely mirrors the pressure changes seen in ground-tilt, with the pauses occurring during deflation-inflation events. A flurry of small earthquakes at the base of the volcano under its summit and upper magma reservoirs indicates some deeper adjustments but has not apparently affected the eruption at the surface. We review these details, while still noting no change in threat to people, using webcams, monitoring signals and reports courtesy of the USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory. Special this week, we play back the first two weeks of Volcano Awareness Month presentations by the USGS-HVO, discussing live viewer questions and comments in between segments, including: - “Kīlauea erupts after more than two years of quiet — twice!” by Carolyn Parcheta, geologist - “The Olivine Time Capsule” by Kendra J. Lynn, geologist - “2021: A year of earthquake activity on the Island of Hawaiʻi” by Ninfa Bennington, seismologist - “Kīlauea's recent explosive history” by Don Swanson, geologist (retired) - “Three-dimensional mapping of Kīlauea” by Brett Carr, geologist This program is brought to you in part by a grant from the Hawaiʻi Island Strong Fund of the Hawaiʻi Community Foundation in partnership with the County of Hawaiʻi, and from smaller donations from viewers like you. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A4MiWnMwMJA
