Kīlauea Eruption Update: Filling Crater & HVNP Public Meeting

3:06 AM · Jul 22, 2022

The eruption at Kīlauea continues to fill its summit crater, now reaching 1200 feet above the deepest point of the 2018 collapse. Even as its output fluctuates in sync with pressure cycles in the magma reservoir, the persistent lava lake still steadily circulates, rising over the course of the past week. Ooze-up flows resumed along the northern margin of the hardened crater floor, but look set to wane as the volcano is deflating as it begins another cycle. Gas emissions varied within the current usual range, impacting the usual downwind island residents with this eruption's primary hazard. Besides the gas, there is still no increased volcanic threat to people from the ongoing eruption. We review the past week in typical fashion, sharing the latest monitoring data, webcams and images courtesy of the USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory, highlighting the graphics and discussing live viewer questions as we go. We update eruption statistics, rates and offer perspective on the volumes compared to 2018, summarize the recent earthquakes on Kamaʻehuakanaloa (formerly Lōʻihi), and include lava videos submitted by our viewers filmed from public overlooks within the National Park. We check in on normal earthquake activity and small signals on Maunaloa volcano, and the now-contained fire on its lower slopes. Our Community Corner reviews the current schedule updates for USGS flights over Kīlauea, HVNP public input forums this month and upcoming in August, the upcoming Experience Volcano festival on July 30-31, and this week's USGS Volcano Watch sharing honors for geologist Frank Trusdell. At 6pm we switch gears to bring you a live broadcast of the Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park and USGS virtual public meeting seeking community input on the environmental assessment (EA) for the proposed action to move the Disaster Recovery Project forward following the 2018 volcanic eruption and summit collapse on Kīlauea volcano. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RWG1KTLlgPk
