Kīlauea Eruption Update: Eruption Persists Through More Pauses

3:02 AM · Dec 24, 2021

Despite another two pauses in Kīlauea's output in the past week, its eruption persists, with lava surging back into the summit lake each time. The pauses, surges and other fluctuations still appear linked to the deflation-inflation cycles in ground-tilt that are registering on summit monitors, as well as the volcano's gas output, but the eruptive interruptions are now coming more frequently within the past two weeks. We recap the details, while noting no change in threat to people, using webcams, monitoring signals and reports courtesy of the USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory, as well as our own time-lapse productions from their images. We briefly touch on Maunaloa and its apparent minor ground adjustments, discuss live viewer questions, and annotate the presentation as usual. The eruption still poses no direct threat to people apart from its gas and particulates, shifting our focus to the observed processes and their context in volcano science. Epic views from the public overlook within Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park document the changes, with every visitor experiencing a unique moment in its evolution. https://youtu.be/acnQkjM3tWM
