Kīlauea Eruption Update, Day 86: March 16, 2021

Approaching the 3-month eruption milestone, Kīlauea continues to pump out lava from its West Vent into Halemaʻumaʻu crater: New: - Double West Vent entry continues, new breakout ongoing - Lava lake depth increases to 222 m / 728 ft - South flank M4.1 has no effect on eruption - Third pressure drop this week ongoing (DI tilt cycles) - SO2 emissions fluctuate ~900 t/d, slowly trending downward - Maunaloa in news, but no rate changes since January We review public monitoring, data and imagery streams from the USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory, summarize the geologic changes in the eruption, and add context, commentary and annotation.
