Kīlauea Eruption Update, Day 72: March 2, 2021

3:06 AM · Mar 3, 2021

Kīlauea's eruption within Halemaʻumaʻu crater continues with minor changes: New: - Active lava surface continues to shrink to west of floating island - Lava lake surface resumes rise after latest pressure cycles - Depth beneath West Vent at new high of 219 m / 718 ft - SO2 emissions still lower, fluctuate ~900 t/d We review publicly available monitoring signals and imagery provided by USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory, as well as their webcam images which we also use to produce our own time-lapse sequences, all the while offering geologic narration and annotation. As usual in our live updates, we try to address several viewer questions, while in today's bonus we compare the lava lake size to airplanes and cruise ships. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pH-HQzjwyQI
