Kīlauea Eruption Update, Day 47: February 5, 2021

4:00 AM · Feb 6, 2021

Pressure drops again on Kīlauea volcano, and its lava lake drops as well. The West Vent continues to supply lava into the lake, but the area with active lava has shrunk further into the western part of the crater. Meanwhile nearby Maunaloa continues its “non-imminent” business as usual. New: - Crater lava depth reduced by 2 m / 7 ft to 211 m / 692 ft deep - Lower lava levels promote more crusting and new ledges - The associated deflation cycle continues on monitoring signals - Unstable weather continues on Hawaiʻi Island: snow, hail & waterspout We display the latest publicly available USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory data & imagery while providing geologic context and annotation in a down-to-earth style, while also taking live viewer questions throughout our update https://youtu.be/5xwGnVuxGTs
