Kīlauea Eruption Update: 9 Months & Still Going

9 months have passed since the start of Kīlauea's most recent summit eruption on September 29, 2021, and while the volcano had a quiet week, its eruption is still quietly ongoing. A pressure drop caused the lava level to drop by about 20 feet (7 m) for most of the the past week, yet lava circulation continued within the active lake even as ooze-up flows lessened from other areas near the crater perimeter. Eruption viewing continues to be great, visible from multiple overlooks within Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park. There is still no increased volcanic threat to people, but the primary hazard of vog still continues to affect the island despite the favorable summer weather pattern. We review the past week's webcams, images and video illustrating the ongoing changes, as well as monitoring data and reports courtesy of the USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory, highlighting the graphics and discussing live viewer questions as we go.
