Kīlauea Eruption Update: 3 Outlets Into Lava Lake From West Vent, Dec 2, 2021

The two new outlets which emerged over 2 weeks ago from Kīlauea's West Vent remain active, along with the original lava entry point, into the still-filling lake. Lava flows continue to ooze up between the crater walls and the hardened lake crust, and spill onto the down-dropped block to the north. We review these minor changes evident through webcams, monitoring data and reports courtesy of the USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory, including our own time-lapse compilations and video shot from the public viewpoint near Keanakākoʻi. As usual we visually annotate the scientific processes and discuss live viewer questions as we go. The eruption still poses no direct threat to people apart from its gas and particulates, shifting our focus to the observed processes and their context in volcano science.
