Kilauea Timelapse (2019-2023) - Water lake to lava lake in 30sec

11:28 PM · Apr 23, 2023

The timelapse begins with the formation of a water lake inside the Halemaʻumaʻu crater, created when groundwater filled the collapsed pit following the 2018 caldera collapse. The lake continued to grow in size until the start of the 2020 eruption, which caused the water to boil away and led to the return of a lava lake. The dynamic nature of Kilauea provides an insight into the volcanic processes that have shaped the islands. As we await the expected return of eruptive activity on Kilauea, this video serves as a reminder of the incredible power and beauty of Hawaii's geological forces.
