Kilauea Eruption Slows This Afternoon, Another Pause?

2:35 AM · Dec 13, 2021

It looks like the eruption on Kilauea might being going into another pause as the eruption rate has cut off significantly over the last 24 hours. The small active lava lake beneath the western vent inside Halema'uma'u has drained at least partially, exposing the edges of the hardened lava inside the lake. This would be the 5th such pause in this eruption. USGS did note a drop-off in the effusion rate in this morning's update, but the largest changes started hours after the USGS Daily Update was posted. Timelapse shows the latest pause from the USGS thermal camera and the S1cam on the southern end of the caldera.
