Kaupakalua Dam on Maui Overtopped, Evacuations Underway

Maui County officials have issued evacuation orders after large amount of rainfall have overwhelmed the Kaupakalua Dam in Haiku, Maui. There have already been requests for emergency extraction from flooded residences made after residents became trapped within by the flooding. A Flash Flood Warning is in effect between Haiku and Pauwela on the Hana Highway, below Makawao. An evacuation shelter is open at the Paia Community Center, Hana High School, Eddie Tam Center. Road closures currently include: Makawao Avenue at Piiholo intersection Makawao Avenue close to Kokomo intersection Brewer Road Kee Road Kaupakalua Road just past West Kuiaha Road Makani Road at Old Haleakala Highway EDIT: Clarification made by Maui EMA, the dam is being overrun but hasn't failed.
