Hawaiian Volcano Special: The 1840 Kīlauea Eruption

3:33 AM · May 31, 2023

On the 183rd anniversary of Kīlauea's 1840 eruption, we recap what is known about the first written record of lava flows in the Lower East Rift Zone. Bearing many parallels to the 2018 eruption, itself at its 5-year anniversary, the 1840 is thought to have gushed at over 90 m3/s, 120 yd3/s, second only to 2018 in Kīlauea's recorded history. This special educational presentation is meant to inform residents of the longer history of activity in the area, leading to better preparedness.
