Hawaii Volcano Summary for the week: Earthquakes Abound, Kīlauea Pressure Builds

9:22 PM · Apr 28, 2023

The seismic activity on Hawaii's Kilauea volcano has exceeded levels seen prior to the January 2023 eruption, with over 1,100 earthquakes in the past week and a half. Magma is still injecting into Kilauea's shallow system, and further intrusion or a new eruption around the summit is possible. However, there is no sign of magma movement outside the summit, and no increased concern for local communities at this time. Gas emissions are low, but still hazardous. There is some seismic activity associated with Maunaloa, but no significant changes in its shallow magma system. Video update: https://youtu.be/H6nHP3V8x7o
