4:23 AM · May 22, 2021

Combined footage of the 2018 Kilauea Eruption, May 14th and 15th. Fissure 17 remains the dominant fissure as two more fissures emerge. Homes are pummeled by debris from the fissures, severally injuring one man that was defending homes from fire. This series tells one version of the 2018 Kilauea eruption on the Lower East Rift Zone, where lava erupted in a residential neighborhood. The story is told through available footage from many sources, including USGS, Hawaii Count Civil Defense, DoD, National Guard, DLNR, and private citizens. This series will go through each day of the eruption and tell the story from the lens of a Leilani Estates resident. The purpose of this series is to give a little more understanding of what it was like for a volcano to erupt in the middle of a community in which you call home. Footage in this episode courtesy of USGS, Mick Kalber, Andrew Hara, Anthony Quintano, and Joseph Anthony.

I snuck into the zone and drove through the fields over the crack system to bring Daryl a garden hose when he was putting out fires on the roof. The poor guy couldn't sleep for days and days and days because he had to stand guard. Being outside there required constant attention to the sky for dodging falling boulders.
