Earthquake Swarm NW of Kilauea Summit, Summit M3.7 Quake

2:56 AM · May 21, 2023

A magnitude 3.3 earthquake, at a depth of 4.6km, occurred at 4:08 PM as part of a series of more than two dozen earthquakes just northwest of the Kīlauea Summit, near the Mauna Loa access road. The seismic activity started with a magnitude 3.1 quake in the aforementioned area and depth, and a magnitude 3.7 event to the northeast of the Kilauea Caldera, which began around 1 PM this afternoon. This area of the swarm is where Mauna Loa and Kilauea meet and influence each other. Earthquake activity inside the Kīlauea Caldera has quieted down following the M3.7 earlier today. Summit tilt jumped twice with the earthquake swarm, once up and once back down. NOTE: Summit activity could go into an eruption sequence with little prior notice. As of this writing, the earthquake swarm is still in progress. No significant changes along either of the Kīlauea's rift zones. Further information will be shared as it becomes available. If you felt the earthquake(s) you can report it to USGS-HVO here: 4:08pm, M3.2 - 1:02pm, M3.1 -
