Maunaloa Eruption Summary, Day 5: Lava Flow Keeps Creeping, Fissure 4 Sluggish

4:25 AM · Dec 3, 2022

On day 5 of Maunaloa's eruption, its longest lava flow continued to slowly advance at 45 meters per hour as it slowly approaches the Saddle Road, also known as Daniel K Inouye Highway (DKI), now roughly 2.7 miles away. Fissure 3 remains dominant, feeding that flow, while Fissure 4 is now reported to be sluggish, with very little eruptive activity. Without further changes, there is little threat to people or property, though the potential closure of the cross-island highway would have significant impacts on transportation travel times.
