Kīlauea Eruption Update: Vent & Perimeter Flows

Kīlauea's eruption within Halemaʻumaʻu has been sprawling with lava flows that emerge through the hardened crater floor near its outer margins. Infrequent lulls, including a 2-day event ending today, have reduced these perimeter breakouts while maintaining active lava at a lower level within the persistent summit lake. Last week's breakout from the West Vent complex continued in the early part of this week, matching the pattern of the perimeter “ooze-up” flows. This remains a great time for public viewing, continuing a long period of no increased volcanic threat to people. We share video and a series of time-lapse animations illustrating these views and changes, along with USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory webcams, monitoring data and reports, annotating the graphics with an on-screen pen.
