Kīlauea Eruption Update: Minor Vent Changes & Bursts, February 24, 2022

Approaching the 5-month mark since its latest onset, Kīlauea's summit eruption continues with only minor vent changes and effusion bursts that follow its still-frequent pauses. The hardened lava lake surface covering most of Halemaʻumaʻu crater continues to bulge upwards near the West Vent as lava erupts beneath it, while ooze-out flows and spatter persist on the eastern crater floor. New outlets emerge from the West Vent and send large flows to the south, while the west pond forms an archway over the lava spillway as shown in our time-lapse of the week. We review media, monitoring signals and reports courtesy of the USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory, focusing on Kīlauea but also noting Maunaloa's lack of significant activity. Great viewing with Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park is captured and shared by viewer video submissions of lava cascades, rapids, spattering, and lake overflows. Gas emissions continue to reflect lava output, and remain the most significant impact to island people, with otherwise no change in current volcanic threat.
