Kīlauea Eruption Update: New Outlets & Lake Changes, November 18, 2021

Interesting minor changes in Kīlauea's eruption occurred over the past week, including the temporary appearance of a 2nd and 3rd outlet from the West Vent that flowed into the lava lake, the continued rising of the vent and hardened crust over the filling lava, and the growing lava overflow zone out of the inner crater onto the northern down-dropped block. We review and present the changes as best seen from various webcams, maps, photos and videos, as well as the scientific details evident on the monitoring data courtesy of the USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory, and as usual our discussion of live viewer questions. The eruption still poses no direct threat to people apart from its gas and particulates, shifting our focus to the observed processes and their context in volcano science.
