The Differences Between Volcanic Hazards and Risk - IRIS Video

8:50 PM · Apr 12, 2021

There is a important distinction between geologic hazards and the associated risk for those living on an island with multiple active volcanoes. In this short video from Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS) the differences are broken down. In general, hazards are events such as earthquakes, volcanic eruption, and secondary events like tsunamis that affect areas outside of the region where the event occurred. Geologic risk is how those hazards impact people. Virtually nothing can be done to reduce the hazards of volcanic eruptions and earthquakes, but actions can be taken to reduce the risk to people and property.
