Stream Highlight - USGS Geophysicist Explains Deep Pahala Earthquakes

9:42 PM · Jan 24, 2021

One of the most frequently asked questions Philip Ong and I have encountered over the last couple of years is about the reoccuring earthquake cluster around the town of Pahala. The earthquakes in this area are very deep, with often sporadic activity occurring with some regularity. In this highlight we sit down to discuss the details of the Deep Pahala Earthquakes with USGS-Hawaiian Volcano Observatory Geophysicist and Seismologist, Brian Shiro. Brian explains the historical context of the seismic activity around Pahala, the geology of the area, and the predominant trains of thought as to the earthquake activity and what connections can be made to volcanic activity on Kīlauea, Mauna Loa, and Lōʻihi. The original video was posted November 20, 2019, and includes an overview of seismicity on Mauna Loa and Kīlauea. https://youtu.be/c-kJ3z2QU9c
