Kīlauea Eruption Update, Day 33: January 22, 2021

5:56 AM · Jan 23, 2021

End-of-the-week update on the 2020-21 summit eruption at Kīlauea volcano, which cycled through less pressure and less lava over the past 2 days. We also review nearby Mauna Loa volcano, which is not erupting: New: - Pressure cycling with Deflation-Inflation events - Deflation reduces lava output from West Vent - Whole lava lake stagnates, forms crust, which overturns - West Vent lava flows over crust, induces more crustal overturning - Only slow changes on Mauna Loa Finally we share this week’s Volcano Watch to go along with all of the other presented USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory imagery & data, but add the context of the 2018 eruption as we consider the initial results of this eruption’s lava chemistry.
