Kīlauea Eruption Recap - First 6 Hours, December 20, 2020

8:35 PM · Dec 22, 2020

Kīlauea volcano erupts at 9:30pm HST on December 20, 2020. We recap images and videos released in the first 6 hours by the USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory, review the monitoring signals, and compare the activity to historical precedents. It's been 27 months since there was lava on Hawaiʻi Island at the end of the 2018 Lower Puna eruption, during which time a lake of water had slowly filled to a depth of 50m / 164ft. Reportedly the entire water body steamed away in the first 30 minutes of the eruption, and gushing lava has filled the crater well above the previous water level. #2020kilaueaeruption https://youtu.be/O2ntezzCnHM
